eBay改朝換代
去年中，思哲參加了eBay一年一度會員大會，加深了對這家公司的認識，有幸見到當時的行政總裁MegWhitman，和拍賣業務總裁JohnDonahoe，最近前者辭職，由後者頂上。 Whitman加入eBay差不多10年，據說當時僅30位員工，現全球eBay員工約14000人。上任多年，雖偶有失手，但評論始終對Whitman譽多於毀，對其下台亦給予肯定。 接受外國傳媒訪問時，Whitman稱自己最大過失不是天價收購Skype，反而感嘆公司未能於日本立足，乃其最大遺憾。另一方面，面對以Facebook為首的社群網站，她費盡思量，亦想不透應否與他們合作，在Facebook建立eBay交易平台。她認為，Facebook用戶多、貿易活動卻少，這點不確定的門戶之見，也許是她跟繼任的Donahoe最大分別。 印象中，Donahoe是個慢條斯理的人，他說話平平滑滑，沒有Whitman那種雀躍和親切，卻多了一份深思熟慮的精神氣質。記得當時我問他，eBay說要專注社群貿易，靠社群力量改善網上交易的體驗，以Facebook為首的網站卻快速冒起，你們怎去應付？Donahoe直截了當說，這不是一個零和遊戲，Facebook社群利用widget也能直接跟eBay互動。 對於「社群先還是貿易先」的迷思，Donahoe大概沒想那麼多，管那貨品張貼在eBay、Facebook、Myspace甚或寂寂無聞的小站，他認為只要改善用戶的使用體驗，交易的時候更方便、更快捷、更多選擇，才是提升eBay競爭力最有效方法。 Whitman臨別之前，大刀闊斧減了賣家收費，Donahoe臨危受命，改善了產品的使用體驗，下一步也許就是賣掉Skype的時候了。 2007年1月29日刊於《蘋果日報》
